Another play on the Ash Borer = Grim reaper. The shadow play is another tired cartoonists trick. Slow week. Weak idea. So I just tried to make it look cool.

Smiley face stickers as a warning. I had another idea for this- a Godfather reference: terrified guy pulls back the bed sheets and instead of a horse head, a smiley face.

I rarely use photoshop special effects. When editorial cartoonists use them it often looks hokey and amateurish. And if it hadn’t been for a deadline that got pushed up 36 hours, I may have spent a lot of time trying to cross hatch the lighting effect before using the lens flare thingerMcBob which looks better than anything I would have been able to scratch out. Now, special effects are no substitute for good writing and drawing. The cool lighting doesn’t save this cartoon. What saves this cartoon is butt crack. Hi-larious and hi-brow.

Here’s the Trib’s editorial.

I love when newspapers fight. The Trib and Sun-Times occasionally throw down and it’s always interesting to watch. There’s a bit of a three way fight going on now between one of Pioneer’s papers- The Oak Leaves and another Oak Park paper called Wednesday Journal. It started with John Huston posting this video of a Journal reporter covering a village meeting:

Then some time later Eric Zorn of the Tribune wrote about the back and forth here.
